Post by RJones8 on Tue Jul 12, 2011 10:42 pm

i think mine may have went up.. i drove it home from middle river Saturday night and it was fine there was this grinding sound when i first started it up but then it went away... Sunday morning i went to start it and all i get is a grinding noise and it sounds like something is spinning freely and the car wont start.. some ppl said it could be the starter idk tho.. but if anyone has one please let me know thanks!

Trans has nothing to do with it not starting.

Does the engine turn over when you turn the key?

Sounds like the starter gear kick out or starter gear. Could be flywheel, or that the starter itself is loose.

Yep, trans moves it, starter starts it. Noise on startup could be above ideas, or even the starter not disengaging once the engine started.

Sounds like the Solenoid or the kick out, Solenoids are notorious on the older Fords, the good news is there cheap and easy to get to, see if you can get someone that would know how, to jump the Solenoid and see if it starts, if so you need a solenoid, if not most likely a starter, and while not common, check to see if the starter is loose from the engine, like Chris suggested, it could be that, if you heard a grind then everything was fine, and now your only hearing the starter spin, and not the motor, it could have been just a little loose, and now its a lot loose.
