Priming oil in a mod engine

Post by TT_05_Stang on Sun Jun 26, 2011 5:05 pm

Most people here wont need this type of info, yet I always like to share things that I have found to be helpful.

Ever since the mod engines came out with the oil pump driven on the crank, its been harder to prime a new engine, and get the lifters to pump up. All pushrod engines usually are driven by a shaft off the cam gear. You could easlily prime the engine by having a longer shaft and a drill. Mod engines oil pump only pump when the crank is turning. While all builders use engine assembly lube that keeps the bearings and such lubed enough for a dry start, the lifters on these engines are not pumped up. This causes the followers(rocker arms) to hit their pedestal and "kick off"

My grandfather back in the 50's made a reservoir that was driven off an air compressor. You would fill it with oil and pump the engine up. I got to thinking about that design and came up with this idea...

I went to home depot and purchased a bug sprayer pump, $8, and a couple compression fittings.

Put oil in it and pumped it up until the saftey release valve was hissing, and started to pump in the oil. About 3 seconds later the lifters were popping and hissing squirting oil. It worked!

Here is a pic of the oil coming out the lifters, past the followers.
