It all started back in the late 90s. People were posting pics of their nice cars to include what was under the hood, their track times, how much money was invested, etc... They were posting these pics with the license plates visible. Well, "professional" theives and chop shops started lurking forums checking these cars out. They would then go out and find them, confirm the car by the license plate, and steal it. Alot of classic and irreplaceable cars worth 6 figures got stolen that way. Since then, people have started covering their license plates so these crooks couldn't match the car.

That's the reason also that alot of forums only show their multimedia section to registered members. It's so thieves can't come on the site and "scout". They would have to be a registered member first thus locking in some information on them.
