A '97 GT question

Lisa now owns a 97 GT, and its a nice car. I have a major problem with it though. Every time the car is started the doors lock, I know that doesnt sound like much but its annoying as hell. I've heard about a special sequence that can be performed to turn off the automatic locking doors but nothing in stone. Maybe someone here can give me better info or point me in the right direction to getting this taken care of. Thank you in advance.

They lock as soon as the car starts? I've known the doors to lock once going about 5 mph, but never at startup. I had a '95 GT. I got rid of it in '99, so I don't remember if the doors locked on startup or once moving.

Hmmm, my '97 doesn't do that, but I wish it did!

Does it have an aftermarket alarm? Mine is set up that way.

I haven't noticed any aftermarket stuff on it, but Im gonna take a closer look today. Yes, as soon as the car starts the doors lock. what a pita!

I'm gonna try this. It's for Ford trucks but...:

• Start in the truck with all doors closed and the key turned off.
  
• Put the switch in the on position and press the door unlock button 3 times.
  
• Put the switch in the off position and press the door unlock button 3 times.
  
• Put the switch in the on position, you should hear a quick note from your horn.
  
• Press the door unlock button 1 time then press the door lock button 1 time.
  
• You should hear a short note from your horn indicating that the auto-lock system is disabled. If you hear a short note then a longer note from the horn then the auto-lock system has just been enabled.
  
• Turn the switch to the off position. You will hear a short note from the horn to let you know that the system has been changed.
  

These steps should be done within 30 seconds in order to properly activate or deactivate the feature.

I was just going to suggest that! lol My b/f's mom had the problem with her F150.

Ed, there is a similar procedure I found for '97s, etc, but it requires messing with a switch under one of the interior quarter panels. It's the proc for putting the car in programming mode. It's not clear if this toggles the door lock thingee off and on, but it may be a start. Google "mustang program door locks" :

1. Turn ignition to RUN or ACC.
2. Momentarily jump pins in programming connector located in left rear quarter panel area.
All doors will lock then unlock to confirm programming mode.
3. Press any button on first keyless remote. Door locks will cycle to confirm programming.
4. If programming a second keyless remote, press any button on second keyless remote.
Door locks will cycle to confirm programming.
5. Turn igniton to OFF. Locks will again cycle to indicate end of programming mode

Update, it still locks when we start the car but now I just automatically hit the unlock side of the toggle switch. Also have a spare key handy.

John thanks for the post. My 98 doesn't do it and I've been looking for info about it. I'm gonna give it a try.

check and see if there is a sidewinder alarm on the car, i had to disable the one on my 95 for that reason as well as a constant drain on the battery, as soon as the car started the doors would lock, and unlock when i turned the car off.
