Parking Brake Problems

Post by ThunderSteed on Thu Dec 24, 2009 10:15 am

My parking brake on two occasions has "frozen-up", or not released when I put the handle down. I'm not pulling it up to the roof, just 3 clicks into firmness, not alot. My car is a manual so I use it as opposed to an automatic. Can someone tell me why this is happening and what I can do to fix or prevent this from happening, because its prematurely wearing down the pads, I'm sure.

Your brakes get warm/hot when you drive, when you park it they start to condensate. With the cold temps, they freeze. If you think your brakes are stuck, stop reapply the brake and release it, it usually frees it up.

Known issue with these mustangs, see http://bradbarnett.net/mustangs/galaxie/tsb/tsb06_05_04.pdf

Have the dealer do his thing...

...and of course, Ford being the way they are, the hours needed to fix this problem have doubled. Just my luck .
Thank you guys for pointing me in the right direction.

if its freezing out i never use my parking brake unless i absolutely need too. especially if it had rear disc brakes with the parking brake mechanism on the rear calipers. i just park it in first gear or reverse. ive had my parking brake refuse to release on cold days. sucks!!!! hope you get it fixed soon

Hope you find a quick and inexpensive fix, Paul!
I've never had that problem...yet, which is hard to believe after now going into her fourth winter, 92K miles and I ALWAYS use the parking brake when parked!

I had the exact problem last year and took it to the dealer. They replaced the boots and grommets per the TSB 06-5-4. Now I have the same problem THIS year. I just don't use the parking brake. I have an automatic btw.

I've almost had mine freeze up on me when we first dipped down into the deep cold. I have to park on a slope. Was lucky it finally released. I've read about this being on the TSB. Hope everything worked out for you.
