Those with 4:10's

Post by Silverstang on Thu Aug 13, 2009 9:25 am

I've noticed that many of you have 4:10's already. So I would like to get some feedback from some guys/gals that live in this area and have to deal with the highs and lows of maryland weather, roads, and traffic. Keep in mind my car is a daily driver and I drive about 30 miles per day. I know what the pro's are but give me some of the con's you have experienced.

I don't daily drive but if I did, make sure you have some good tires. I have sumitomos and they are HORRIBLE with the 410s in any kind of weather. Highway driving might affect how soon you arrive (I tend to drive slower on the highway b/c the rpms are up there pretty high). I get worse gas mileage but that's b/c of me and not being able to keep my foot out of it.

Just my 3-4 cents.

I would say go for it. I daily drive my Cobra 50+ miles, one way, every day, with 4.30's and it is not an issue. I get no worse mileage than with 3.73's if not slightly better since i dont have to down shift and can up shift sooner. At 80mph in 5th gear im at 3000 rpm, and thats the same RPM as a stock Toyota RAV4 with an auto trans. I dont really know of any cons, unless you like cruising at an ultra low RPM. In traffic the gears are great since you can pass slower cars with less effort thanks to the torque multiplication.

+1! I put about 25K miles a year on my car and have put 65K on it since getting the 4.10s. I've never had a problem with them! The only complaint is you will need all season or dedicated snow tires if you plan on driving in the snow!

I think Excessive Motorsport in Manassas VA is offering gears and the install for $499 during the summer. Chris does great work on gears.

With 4:10's you will see a decent decrease in gas mileage at highway speeds. Also, if you have a loud exhuast, the increased highway RPM's will make it just that much louder. You also will lose some top-end speed. I went with 3:73's for those reasons. And I still got a significant seat-of-the-pants increase in performance. I haven't been to the track to get actual numbers, but can definitely feel it.

I may be gearing back to 3.73 or 3.55 from my 4.10s. Only because I run out of gear before the end of the 1/4 though... letting up or shifting to o/d don't make for the best times.
