Tighten Steering Box

Post by Mrs Bzlee on Mon Apr 13, 2009 8:59 pm

Can anyone tell me how do I tighten up my steering? (65 Stang manual steering) There is alot of play in the steering especially on the highway.

on the top of the box there should be an adjustment screw w/ a jam nut. loosen the nut, rotate the screw clockwise a lil at a time and check the play. If you get it too tight it will jam the steering

Let us know how it works out. You sure the play is in the box?

That nut won't move period. We sprayed it with WD40. Thought we let it sit for a while. Tried 11/16th socket. It fits the nut but its only there solid. I don't want to use an impact wrench. Afriad I'll strip the nut. Would heating it up help? Dosen't appear that its ever been lossened. Is there any other place that we could tighten?

Nope, that's the only adjustment. You can try some heat, but becareful. Are you sure that's where the play is?

No, I'm not 100% sure thats where the play is I just assumed that was the only place that I could adjust. Where else should I check? We're going to try again tonight to see if the nut breaks loose with the WD40 sitting on it for 24hrs. Thank you for helping me with this.

You could have play in the rag joint, tie rod ends, center link, ball joints. Any one of those.

Wow, nothing ever easy. Maybe I should take it someone and fork over the $. First I think I'll do some homework on checking these things to see if its something I can do on my own (probably not).

If you have a jack and a pair of jack stands, set it up w/ the suspension loaded on the stands and shake down the front end to see if there is any play somewhere else.

If you take it to a shop, they shouldn't charge you more than a 1/2 hours labor to check it. Very simple to do.

We broke the nut loose finally. A few turns of the screw and most of the play is gone now. We jacked it up and shook the tire from top to bottom and then side to side. The tow in and tow out was a little loose but the ball joints seem ok. It rides alot better on the highway now. Thanks for all the help.
