20" wheels and weights

Post by Droptop306 on Mon Mar 09, 2009 5:44 am

Can anyone tell me if there is another way to have the weights that balance the rims put on besides double sided tape. It seems that my mustang has been to Gillette Tires through Ford 3 times for the weights falling off. I keep getting the wobble in the steering wheel. Also should I feel any difference with a 1/8" spacer on the rims. Had to make clearance for the 6 Caliper pistons to clear my rims. Thanks as usual for all the information that you guys/gals give. This site is awesome. I do plan to start joining in with the cruises and shows as the weather is breaking. Fair weather mustang driver sorry.

Sounds like you need to use better stick-on weights. I have used them on all of my wheels, never had any issue with them falling off. Check your local auto parts store (advance auto, auto zone, etc) and see if they have the Mr. Gasket brand stick on weights, as they have better adhesion than the cheap stuff.

I will see what ford will do with my recomendation of the adhesive. Someone told me to use silicone probably the same as the adhesive. But what about the spacer does this cause any vibration.

usually if secured prperly no...could be a bad tire even...being a tire with a shifted belt or bad tread design...its usually 1.0hr (labor rate usually $100/hr..yet i think there is a special rate/fee for balancing)....to roadforce all tires at the dealer...i recommend it.

all else fails bring it to me at Tate chevy in annapolis.

I deal with Bob Bell Ford in Glen Burnie. I also have a friend that works for Ford in the production side. I might chat with him and see what he can work out.

I've never had an issue with the adhesive weights falling off and I drive 30K miles a year! Surface prep is usually the culprit.
As far as the spacer goes, you shouldn't be able to tell it's there. Do you still have the factory slip on clip that holds the rotor on the studs? If that is still on there it won't allow the spacer to sit flush with the hub.

I work for an tire shop and I have weights that will fit on the lip on the inside of the wheel... Or we can use stick weights but the wheel has to be clean to put on. I even had to use a hair dryer to warm the wheel up so the weights will stick. Alson I dont know why you need the spacer for the calipers? 20 inch wheel should clear just fine..... Let me know if I can help.

I switched the rotors out to wilwood 14" and 6 caliper pistons. my backspacing never cleared the rotor. So i used a 1/8" spacer to clear them. I never installed the rotor clip back on.

the rim design didnt allow for caliper girth....usually only run into those issues when installing aftermarket BBK like brembo, rotora, ssbc, baer....
